Level Designer

Mission

Own the playable quality of the modules you build. What you ship should be clear, engaging and coachable for frontline workers, grounded in real work and correct procedure. You design and you implement, brief to shipped.

Outcomes you're accountable for

  1. Playable experience quality primary

    • Learners understand goals, consequences and feedback without confusion, and can connect "what happened" to "what to do on the job".
    • The module is readable, well paced and tuned.
    • Scoring reflects real performance against the objectives and tells a learner what to improve.
  2. Procedural fidelity

    • Safety-critical detail is correct, checked with subject matter experts early. Where reality is adapted to work as an experience, that is deliberate and written down.
  3. It ships, in every language and customer version

    • Your modules hit their date, and the localised builds are as good as the source.
    • Nothing generative reaches a client unchecked. Artefacts, wrong characters, broken continuity and mistranslations are caught by you, before QA.
  4. The pipeline is faster because you used it

    • You work agentically by default, and what you learn goes back into the authoring pipeline instead of staying in your head.

Responsibilities

Design the moment to moment

  • Define how the module plays: learner flow, the decision points, the feedback at each one, failure and recovery.
  • Turn objectives into what the learner must demonstrate, not what they are told. A scene that only informs is not doing its job.
  • Design the decision, not just build it: what the learner chooses between, what makes the wrong choice genuinely tempting, and what the consequence teaches.
  • Keep UX, pacing and narrative flow aligned rather than competing.

Build it, end to end and agentically

  • Build in our authoring pipeline using Claude Code: spec, images, voice and video, scenes, captions, questions, preview, release.
  • Direct the models. Measure before you ask for a change, keep edits surgical, verify the result, and know when to stop looping and do it by hand.
  • Build and iterate in Unreal Engine 5 where the module calls for it: greybox, sequences, the state machine that drives the experience, render and export.

Validate and iterate

  • Playtest your own work against the spec and the objectives before anyone else sees it.
  • Turn client feedback into fixes, and judge defect versus change request.
  • Estimate and track your own work, flag slippage early, and ask in open channels.

What we're looking for

  • AI native, in production. You build with agentic coding tools, Claude Code or equivalent, on real deliverables with real deadlines. Required, not a bonus. Expect to walk us through something you shipped this way, including where the model failed you and what you did about it.
  • Design craft, not just implementation craft. You can say why a scene is not landing, and show us a decision point you designed and what each choice was there to teach.
  • Around 3 to 5 years in game or level design, and strong Unreal Engine 5 skills, specifically tuning and iterating interactive experiences.
  • Fundamentals: pacing, readability, feedback loops, consequence and failure handling.
  • Practical fluency with generative image, video and voice tooling, and the judgement to tell good output from output that only looks finished.
  • Comfortable in a repo: branches, pull requests, review.
  • Organised, communicative, delivers without being chased. Enough grasp of art, animation, programming and sound to brief them and integrate their work.

Nice to have

  • You have improved a tool or pipeline you depend on.
  • Localisation at volume, VR or web builds, or safety and industrial training content.
